to me, it's almost irrelevant trying to convince the boneheads that cc is real
and to make it political - that it exists or doesn't exist, what's causing it and if it's mm or not -
is just irrelevant
the only thing that is crucial about any climate change - whether it's from burning coal, the axle of the earth running out of grease, an excess of seagulls landing on one side of the planet all at the same time, gay marriage, legalising pot or EV's accelerating too hard and pushing the earth over to one side
it doesn't matter
what matters is to grasp what it all means - and then, if that meaning is going to put people and property at risk - then we need to be planning and building to mitigate those risks.
We KNOW what many of the risks are ------------ we KNOW that SLR is a risk - we KNOW that bigger storms are a risk, we know that mega droughts are a risk we know that flooding is a risk
and we're already seeing results of it -2.5 million americans displaced in 2023 from weather events -
2.5 million - in a highly developed nation
then, god help them - look at developing nations and the latest years of flooding etc
the governments of the world need to really get their arse into gear - whilst they can play about with their ideas of 'slowing the change' or whatever stuff they have in their minds -
what IS real is what it all means - and that what it means is already happening and we need to just get on and manage it -
take the increased risk of a major cyclone hit for SEQ - probability? probably low -but, the probability is taking a major shift up the scale
the more important issue is that if that probability black swan comes in to land -
it's a national catastrophe --------- and what does that mean? -- What it means is that it will affect every single Australian, no matter where they are.
It will devastate the economy, it will create a national homelessness crisis of enormous proportion etc etc.
At the same time - we have very high probability of damage to the same areas from storms and certainly flooding ---------- which will give similar problems, just not as big in scale
so, where are the plans for such? - There are many plans in Oz for the immediate disaster planning - lots of basketball stadiums and lots of mattresses and things like that - all over the country.
But, they are just for short term, and they are little to no such plans for a recovery - and in a major risk -------- well, I think it's just way to hard to even think about ------------ BUT, the risk is very real.
IMO - we are thinking far too much about cc and what or who to blame for it -
we really should be out picking the colour of the portable emergency accommodation we need to be buying and storing away ------- in enormous numbers.
Because if the shit hits the fan for an area the size of the Gold Coast or Brisbane - we have NOWHERE for such numbers of people to go
and they can't stay in tents for years at a time - that's just not possible
