The fibre should have only been used where it was economically viable to do so ie densely populated areas with everyone else using mobile or satellite connections provided by 3rd parties, not the NBN.

Before the nationalisation of the fibre network you could get a 25mps ADSL 2 connection in Melbourne $29 p.m.
When the compulsory NBN came in it went to $59 p.m. for a 25mps connection.
Double the price for the same service!

Back in the $29 days, you got bugger all download quota before the big $/MB costs set in. These days, data is limitless.
We stream a lot of stuff and my wife works from home on online calls 8 hours per day - we use 5-10 GB per day, which would have cost a bloody fortune!
