    Only the eastern part of Ukraine came under control of the Russians in the 1600s. Crimea was annexed in the late 1700s but the majority of modern Ukraine wasn't under Russian control. In fact a big chunk of Western Ukraine for formerly part of Poland before that was divided up and remained under the control the the Habsburg Empire (Austria) until 1917 when WW1 brought an end to them.
