I dont know if that's correct, it probably could have supported 1 billion people, its just ~95% (just a rough guess) was concentrated in a very small area (South East Asia, some of Europe) - Not much in North America, South America, Africa, Australia. So, I mean, it probably could have supported 1 billion people.



"The industrial revolution enabled people in many countries to transition from a life of poverty and subsistence agriculture (except some of the poor buggers in third world countries) to one where cheap, high density power enabled them to leverage their time. This allowed humanity to flourish, people could start dedicating time to the pursuit of medicine, agriculture developments and science, which was the catalyst for a population explosion. Without this revolution 6 out of every 7 people alive today would not exist. So who wants to put their hand up to be one of the 6?"

Completely agree, the industrial revolution and the utilisation of fuels such as coal, oil, and gas allowed humanity to prosper and launch us into a new era of living. That doesn't negate that the burning of those fuels added trillions of excess CO2 into the atmosphere. CO2 (among other greenhouse gasses) has a warming affect on the atmosphere by trapping long wave radiation.
