Commercially viable nuclear ‘won’t be subsidised’
Setting up nuclear power capabilities should be “commercially viable” without government subsidies, shadow treasurer Angus Taylor says.
Angus Taylor at the National Press Club on Wednesday. Alex Ellinghausen
He says using existing sites for nuclear plants will help drive costs down, after the CSIRO estimated that the nation’s first large-scale nuclear power plant could cost as much as $17 billion.
“Lots of people bandy numbers around nuclear and other energy sources,” he says.
“[But] if it is commercially viable, is not going to be subsidised. It’s as simple as that. That is how the commercial world works,” Taylor says.
