Whales are a resource that should be harvested. A humpback whale can yield over 10 tons of edible oil,3 tons of meat and a ton of whale meal for stock food. The whaling ceased because Aristotle Onassis put together a fleet of 50 ships, took no notice of quotas and decimated the whale population. The population of humpbacks is now equal to what it was in the 1950s. I was actively associated with the industry for a few of the "action" years in Australia and New Zealand. I have just published a book on the whaling industry, titled "My Whaling Days". (Available through Trading Post). I've also sent complimentary copies to all the Australian Whale Watch tour operators. I've recently been contacted by people from Tonga to design a small processing plant for use there. Their prime objective is to process a few whales for their meat.
Plenty of whales to be seen passing along the East Coast right now.
