Why do you think this is associated with short covering? Because the aggregated daily gross short reported is the following:
Daily trading gross shorting active is around 3-4m with outlines on wide spread share price days. On the assumption is should be around around those levels. 3-4m daily activity + 8m short covering from block trades = Around about 11.8m shares strange occurrence?
If it reports similar tomorrow it would validate the short covering? All of this data is public disclosure aside from the identity of the broker and clients. (You could probably be able to see the broker who transacted it but that would require a pay source for that access.)
