Japan locks in 10 years of Santos gas amid energy security push

Energy giant Santos has struck a 10-year deal to sell super-chilled liquefied gas to Japan, underscoring what the company argues is the Asian nation’s long-term appetite for imported gas even as the world tackles climate change.

The Albanese government’s “future gas strategy,” released by Resources Minister Madeleine King, says it recognises that gas will be needed by major economies in the region to meet demand during the energy transition as they seek to reduce their reliance on coal.

Japan is the world’s second-biggest buyer of LNG, behind China.
