Once you exclude the lifestyle managements and the drill happy guys what you have left are the serious managements who approach the problem slowly and cautiously. Beginning with desktop surveys, careful soil analysis (and then maybe rock chip sampling), run some airborne geophysics and if all checks out put down a few tentative holes.
An example of a successful case? IPT. The management over 16 years ran the ruler over 80 prospects... hardly ever drilled and didn't go crazy with the money. Now it has a company making project. Others? DEG, AZS in recent times.
The stats are only 1 in 1000 deposits are commercial. There are plenty of small discoveries which are not big enough to mine profitably.
