    “ France has had a long-standing tradition of secularism and separation of church and state. Specifically, an 1872 law prohibited state authorities from collecting data on individuals' ethnicity, religious beliefs, or political opinions.[3] This law was reaffirmed in 1905 when France codified the separation of church and state.[3]

    So France banned the official collection of data about religious affiliation as early as 1872, over 150 years ago, as part of its policy of secularism and separation of religion from the state.[3] This prohibition on collecting religious data by state authorities has remained in effect to this day.
