I think this rapid change has confused a lot of people.
People forget that crematoriums and grave diggers were totally over run in the early days in many countries. India had bodies floating down the river and Indonesia had people collapsing and dying on the streets. This is what caused the initial pandemic fears. They were real and not a scam.
But then the virus became less and less deadly over time to the point now were many people get less symptoms then a flu or even bad cold. As usual govt responses were slower than the rate of change of Covid19 itself. People with busy lives also did not keep up with the changes.
What was an appropriate response to overrun crematoriums quickly became an inappropriate response to a lesser virus.
On top of this the lethality or lack of lethality varied with age or more simply ones standing oxygen count in your blood stream and general health and fitness on top of that.
People like things to be simple and to make value judgements on standard facts or outcomes. But they are found wanting as things were not simple, the facts changed over time and with those changes the outcomes too.
Yes, it has been an IQ test beyond the capabilities of most of society and remains so.
