What you read is the total volume including what the instos trade after hours. You need to monitor the data right before 4pm. It's funny but in Australia, some stocks are traded with huge volumes afterhours by the instos. I heard that teh big players arrange to transfer large amounts afterhours. I think you don't get short sales afterhours just because the price tends to be lowest. The short sellers sell when the stock is at high points in regular hours.
