I think Hybrids and PHEV are a short term gap fill. The Legacy OEM's are behind the eight ball and this is how they plan to keep market share until they have supply chains in place, hence, the media advertising blitz.
So, they put two different energy sources and drive motors into a vehicle and integrate the technology. How can this be cost effective? Answer, its not.
Disclosure. I purchased a PHEV last year. In hindsight, now, I would go BEV. The price drops we see now, and will continue to see, make the EV case very compelling for urban dwellers. I use the PHEV almost exclusively on EV mode. Probably at 95%. The only time the petrol motor has been used is on two road trips.
