But seriously, the bottom line is, I don't know whether or not extracting lithium from seawater will be economically viable, I suspect not because there will probably be other methods developed which are cheaper, but the take home point is that lithium is not a particularly scarce element and the technology to obtain and refine it will only improve, meaning it will only become cheaper over time.

Just in case it needs to be said... which puzzlingly seems to be the case, it is irrelevant to compare something to something obviously much much more difficult and expensive. You wouldn't avoid digging gold out of a gold mine because there were trace amounts of platinum or uranium in the same mine which were more expensive and difficult to obtain. Lithium is obviously far easier to extract from seawater than gold, and it is plausible that the method could be refined to the point where it will be economically viable. I think it's very likely that if lithium prices remained where they are and no other methods were ever going to be developed or improved, extraction from seawater would eventually become a common practice. Gold extraction from seawater will obviously never happen.

What is bizarre is that you are agreeing with me that it isn't economically viable to extract lithium from seawater, yet still feel the need to somehow say that I am wrong.
