"complaining about loosing fuel excise revenue to maintain the roads being damaged by the heavier freeloader BEVs." @danwell.finno
I don't have a problem with taxes to maintain roads. What I have a problem with is where the fee is not proportionate to the damage.
There is a simple rule of thumb formula for the damage done based on the number of axles and the weight on them - it is quoted in many places, eg
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth_power_law
https://www.profitgreenly.com/p/road-damage-fees-and-profit
https://outbacktravelaustralia.com.au/blog/trucks-are-smashing-up-the-roads/
So, if you drive a 2.4 ton SUV vs my 1.2 ton small car then you are doing 16 times more damage to the road than I am for each km travelled. But you and I pay the same tax.
Now we need to remember that ICEs get their petrol from servos, and servos get it from trucks coming from the refineries. If the ICEs go away so will the thousands of daily trips by the tankers, and save even more damage to the roads, and of course some traffic accidents.
