Who’s the “hostile nation” as you put it in your scenario? Sorry but you lost me at “opium” and “gunboats”. If you’re suggesting China have been hard done by by us mean Australians you’re going to get a TURN IT UP!! I think you’ll find the international relations picture is far more complicated and nuanced than an over-simplistic “goodies and baddies”. China has achieved some remarkable things in terms of its rapid shift from primarily an agrarian society to a modern economy. But to paint China as some sort of victim is to grossly misunderstand the complexities of its political and economic system.
