This was a great read - thanks.
Ill try to in expertly explain the logic of capping renewables and how this will make energy cheaper.
1. Renewables are the cheapest form of energy when there are no renewables in the grid as every kWh can displace an alternative form of energy.
2. The price of energy in a system that's 100% renewable and runs out of battery storage is infinite as there is NO supply.
3. Increasing % of renewable is cheaper as it displaces other forms of generation up until a point where you get too much energy at certain times and not enough at others (eg solar at midday in summer) Then renewables start to displace baseload power causing it to leave the grid causing less supply when we need it causing prices to increase. This is why they want to be able to turn your rooftop solar off (emergency backstop) it's also why FIT has gone down from 12c to 3.x c here in VIC over the last 6 years or so.
4. Therefore renewable generation is increasingly expensive as renewable saturation in the grid increases. All the energy is produced at the same time and typically not when you need it hence the need for large batteries and/or drastically oversized renewable generation and/or backup generation that's sits idle most of the time all of which cost $.
Supply Demand, look up Germany's investment in renewable energy and then their power prices.
Also I don't remember anyone using the "solar panels are too expensive let's not deploy them" logic that's used on nuclear. We did deploy them and costs (of panels) reduced dramatically.
Nor was it a problem that it's taken 10+ years to get where we are on renewables but thats apparently too long for nuclear therefore don't do it???
