these small trades are the hallmark of flash traders trying to shake a tree. They have agreements to operate in dark pools and the agreement stipulates an amount of volume to drive liquidity for certain brokers or financial institutions. Hence they will do very small nominal amounts testing the depth of certain volatile stocks with in the dark pool.
