Families of Hostages and Oct. 7 Victims Petition Israel's Top Court to Establish Commission of Inquiry

'The people entrusted with the Israeli public's wellbeing must take responsibility for their part in the disaster': Petitioners are demanding that a commission of inquiry investigate what led to the deadly Hamas attack on Oct. 7

The families of Israeli hostages and of those murdered during the Hamas attack on October 7, together with residents who have been displaced from Israel's north and south, submitted a petition to the High Court Thursday, asking it to order the immediate formation of a national commission of inquiry into events surrounding October 7.

The petition asks that a commission of inquiry investigate what preceded and led to the calamity, including the functioning of Israel's political and public institutions, the defense establishment and national emergency systems.

The petition, filed by attorney Gilad Barnea, asserts that a national commission of inquiry is necessary now "to restore things to the way they should be, in which the judicial systems operate for the benefit of the citizens and ensure that the people entrusted with their wellbeing take responsibility for their part in the disaster."

The petition adds that establishing a commission of inquiry would "free the victims [of the attack] from having to cope with questions of guilt, restore their confidence in the systems tasked with ensuring their wellbeing, and enable them to start processing the trauma."
