This isn’t entirely correct. You could be a long term holder of IGO shares in your commsec brokerage account and then use your IBKR account to short IGO as a swing trade. Chuck the profits from shorting (if you profit) back into your long term account holding with commsec. Rinse and repeat.
A lot of the US originating brokerages like IBKR allow you to short stocks quite easily. I personally hold a parcel of IGO from $5.60 in a long term account but would also see the appeal of shorting it for a trade in the short term. Couple days to a week max.
You could also use the short position as a hedge for your long term position if you believe battery metals are to stay suppressed for the next few months.
