    I agree with you that a Melbourne Cup style voting system throws up huge variations in election outcomes with relatively small changes in voter support - as we've just seen in the UK. But that's their system and those who refuse to vote do so deliberately.

    Nor do I like 'runoff elections' as we're seeing in France - slow, messy, inconvenient, expensive and it seems prone to 'shenanigans' such as candidates withdrawing to leave a two horse race from an original field with heaps of runners.

    Back to my federal seat of Indi, how voters worked out what they had to do to remove Sophie Mirabella and to replace her with a truly independent candidate still amazes me. For five elections in a row now they've not caved into what's been dumped on them by our political parties and even the ACL. It appears that Helen Haines will continue to represent the people of Indi for as long as she's happy and able to do so!
