Yes history was brutal, conquer and steal was the name of the game. Russia was a tiny marshy land before 1535, built its empire by conquering, subjugating and enslaving. They were also lucky that Mongols conquered all that land, came to Moscovy and just gave up. Other empire building were as brutal as were the Russians.
But the world took drastic steps to move ahead since WW2 and Europe, except for a few hiccups, has been somewhat peaceful since. Putin wrecked all that and with this land grabbing,stealing and genocidal war has dragged Europe decades backward.
