They started on the super soft tyres which were going off real quickly in practice. It could have paid off by changing them early, but the front runners stayed out and eventually their soft tyres came good again and were able to push hard with no graining issues.

I'm surprised you found the season boring, as I thought it was great. I think we you're coming from is the difficulty in overtaking, which was a big problem at the last race!
