Pity Bathurst has all their transport eggs in one basket !
If they had kept more of an open mind and supported the shipping option out of Westport from time to time they would have had an alternative and there would not have needed to cut back on production.
It should be noted that In Solid Energy days when there was a shortage of rolling stock, a quarter million tons of coal was shipped by tug and barge from Westport to Lyttelton in 12 months, and shipments were made regularly to Port Kembla and Whyalla steelworks also.
No doubt Kiwirail will have declared force majeure and the expense of trucking to Ikamatua will be Bathurst's.
Is this a further indication of Kiwirail's lack of maintenance in the tunnel ceiling collapsing?
The people of Westport are only too aware of the frailty of this rail connection but Bathurst unfortunately have ignored the port.
