Know two families that have had children compete in the Olympics (rowing / badminton ) and another person who has competed in the Tour de France , it was interesting to see how political the Olympics is even for the competitors to get accepted , and the expenses involved (and they were competing over 10 years ago ).
Anecdotally To me the Olympics looks like a subsidy by average tax payers for rich young people to compete in questionably relevant sports to the general population , bit like the govt paying for State ballet or the national philharmonic orchestra (also know a rich family trying to get their spoilt daughter in that ) or royal tours - I am against all .
Sounds like a good idea just base it in Greece , keep the costs down and reduce the political rubbish .
