WW3 has begun and it's currently following the Chinese "Unrestricted Warfare" road map.
The aliens that were defeated in the intergalactic war and were exiled from the Federation to Earth, with limited technology, know-how, and resources to escape, have a keen interest in averting the kinetic stage of WW3.
To me, that's a more believable explanation than 'future humans' and explains their need to mutilate animals (and unfortunate humans) for essential nutrients.
Ross was reporting what some followers told him about the blue colours. Perhaps it's they who have been influenced by Avatar.
If the Varginha alien is anything to go by, aliens seem to come in a variety of colours.
