Hint: Get hold of a book called "Fooled By Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in Life and Markets" (Author: Nicholas Taleb). Taleb tables a concept he calls "alternative histories" which basically means that the outcomes of investments need to be assessed, quality-wise, not just at face value, but in the context of whatever alternative histories might have come into being.
