North Carolina-based mine safety expert Bruce Dial, who is not involved in the rescue effort, said it could be days before a rescue effort could be launched.

He said video images of the scene show what appears to have been a fairly powerful explosion.

Dial said that typically, in coal mine explosions, a buildup of methane gas ignites, setting up a rolling explosion of coal dust particles that doesn't end until all of the coal dust burns or the mine shaft runs out of oxygen.
