I've only ever worked in sports where either there is no gender categorization, or where it is optional.
I like optional. Have a woman's league if you think it's important, but allow women to participate in mixed league as well. Then the really exceptional talents can flourish, irrespective of gender.
Best in class, irrespective of chromosomes or dangly bits, participation of your own volition.
