to, toward and with are in the Greek preferred definition order, now if you go and get an overall definition of these three, it CLEARLY shows none of them are talking about another person, being with the God, who is the Father.
Couple that with the only word available for the first word in 1:2 = This, that tells you the same thing, "this" is not a person.

NO "the" at the start, it is Not Gens beginning, it's outside of that -> Logos/plan and while that is in you, it is you = and God was the Word.

"with the God" = this God is NOW the subject and the beginning of the next part - and God was the Word.
Mess with word order = you mess with the Greeks message and WHY Theon and Theos are used here and not just Theon.

Why do most have it wrong = false teaching began around the 100's, so Clearly translators come from a bias view point (human nature in play), translate according to what's been going around for years.
