You make the 1950's situation sound like a virtue: Should we construct our economic system in such a way that it maximises hardship and distress? Or should workers get a say in how the job should work? The period you refer too had a predominantly male workforce. It also had a life expectancy gap of 7 years in favour of females over males, probably in no small part due to the prevailing working conditions at the time.
