P&GJ) — Karpowership has revealed plans to invest $1 billion in LNG-to-power infrastructure. This project, based in Mozambique, aims to provide reliable electricity to the South African Power Pool (SAPP), benefiting up to 5 million people.
The investment includes a new natural gas-powered facility with a capacity of up to 500 MW, featuring one of the world’s largest Powerships and a Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU). This development builds on Karpowership’s existing operations in Mozambique, where it has been supplying 115 MW of electricity to Zambia since 2016.
The project is expected to enhance Mozambique’s energy supply and support neighboring countries within the SAPP region, including Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia. It will also create job opportunities and support economic growth.
Karpowership’s COO, Zeynep Harezi Yılmaz, noted, “We are pleased to strengthen our partnership with Mozambique and contribute to regional energy needs and economic development.”
The investment will provide additional power to Mozambique’s electricity utility, Electricidade de Mozambique (EdM), and offer energy solutions to public and private entities in the region.

French energy company TotalEnergies expects to take the final investment decision (FID) on a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal in Mozambique by September 2024, reported Reuters, citing a spokesperson.
Planned to be built at Matola port in Mozambique, the Matola terminal could become the first major LNG supplier to South Africa upon completion.
The plan will align with the government’s efforts to significantly expand its gas market locally.
Mozambique is facing a gas supply shortage due to the gradual depletion of Sasol-operated onshore gas fields within the next few years.
The terminal is estimated to cost around $550m to develop. It is being developed by TotalEnergies in partnership with South Africa’s privately-held Gigajoule and Mozambican entities.
