Most Australians I meet sense we are going backwards.
That we’re becoming weaker.
So I’m glad to be a member of Peter Dutton’s team.
He has a plan to get our country moving in the right direction.
To be strong again.
It’s a heavy privilege to be in his team; entrusted with the critically important Defence portfolio.
I know there are no other areas of public policy where the consequences for failure are so grave.
I shared this weight with some high-level Australian and international defence and industry leaders in Canberra earlier this week.
The topic for my speech was: What would I do as the next minister for defence?
I put the pressure on myself.
How would I lead the defence organisation as we solve Australia’s most difficult national security problems?
How would I ensure all spheres of defence, from our frontline soldiers to the departmental secretary, are effective in what they do?
How will we generate the combat power, the industrial capacity and the alliances we’ll need, to strengthen our position in our region?
One thing I do know.
The first great change, that must happen to ensure the effectiveness of our defence, is to change this government.
