It is derived from the French word for a stick of explosives, which is "fracture". So a stick of fracture is used to "frac" rock when mining. A slang word is defined as: very informal usage in vocabulary and idiom that is characteristically more metaphorical, playful, elliptical, vivid, and ephemeral than ordinary language. "Frac" is very basic technical parlance and not slang.
