but listening to some Muslim women who say that Islam is 'liberating', its clear that its more a cultural matter than a religious one.

so we could relate this to patriarchal oppression of women, or even oppression of men so that men then 'kick the cat' and smash the wife.

ps FGM is more an African tribal culture issue than it is Islamic. FGM isn't mentioned in Islamic texts and children in many Muslim nations aren't subjected to such sexual abuse.
