Hitler knew about Stalin’s intentions to contain Germany, Hitler knew about the ongoing discussion between the Soviet Union and English and French. Once the discussions between the 3 failed, Hitler made his move and Stalin had to look after the interest of his country, the same as any other country in the world at the time. The Soviet Union had the biggest target on their back, so they had to appease the monster the most, hoping for no military action against them.
