The deal and timeline was set by Trump, short of putting more troops back into Afghanistan and staying longer with increased battles with the Taliban and risking more US casualties, there was very little wiggle room. The Taliban weren't going to offer any concessions, especially after they got what they wanted from their deal with Trump.
