@reon1 patents issued are patents in the eyes of the law unless somebody can show one infringes on a pre existing one.

Long story short, Dr David Morris, head of the oncology unit of St George's Hospital in Sydney and professor and research scientist at the University of NSW noticed in a test that mpl was having an effect on human cancer cells, so he and a team at UNSW did some deep research to check out if this was just a minor and temperary aberration as happens with some molecules upon cancer or if there was something more important going on, and lo and behold it turned out that monepantel was upregulating autophagy through its effect on the complex mTOR signalling pathway system which was inhibiting the growth of the cancer cells - they had a brand new mTOR inhibitor on their hands!!! Now the question was, could a way of making it a useful treatment be developed? Well, after many years and twists and turns that would put a classic epic to shame, we now have a vert useable and stable mTOR inhibitor pill with minimal side effects.

Here's one listing of the patents and note that more are pending. They are listed under the Pitney Pharmaceuticals name, as that was the company which was created for developing monepantel and a couple of other now discontinued oncology drug and then taken over by PharmAust soon after in late 2013 iirc.
