To my knowledge there's no requirement to actively/directly report the closing of short positions. However, since there is a requirement (at the broker level) to report all open short positions on a daily basis, the ebb and flow of ongoing short positions can be easily tracked.
You're aware of the Shortman website, right(?), which collates the raw data from ASX & ASIC to neatly report current short positions for all ASX stocks?
