My information is that the process to place stock in the US take ages - I've heard 3 months+ to get issue done.
ASX process much quicker and if they were looking at a SPP, the majority of shareholders are still Aussie based.
I've been involved with a lot of private/SI placements and the advantage of those is that you don't need a prospectus (saving $$ legal fees) and it is quick - 3 - 4 days to complete.
