immigration needs to be carefully managed. but while our families are getting smaller and more women wanting a career instead of a family, we need to at least replace our falling numbers.

economics is founded on growth. population growth is a key to economic growth. if our population goes backward so too will our economy.

but you make a very important point that I wasn't aware of tarvie. population growth may peak at some time...... and what will cause such a peak? education and rising ambition for a life that is rich in emotional as well as economic freedom. contraception becoming globally available? reduction in religious conservatism that frowns on contraception?

watching the Heart Foundation ads on the tele reminds me that the medical operating motive is to keep people alive and healthy for longer, to increase the quality of life and longevity for all. so our aging population will increase.

if we don't have replacement in our workforces (globally and nationally) our economic growth will collapse eventually. there'll be too many old and infirm people to care for and not enough taxpayers and carers to support the aged. this could happen in Aus within the next 10 years if we don't have immigration.
