The simple answer is BHP is Australias largest tax payer, generally always has been. So individually contributes more than anyone or anything. Add in state royalties, infrastructure running into the $10s of billions spent here and 10s of thousands of extraordinarily high paying jobs.
Which is why it’s such a shame on what labor is doing to mining companies. Besides IR laws and red tape just take a look at what wonderful Tanya just did to RRL’s gold mine. Absolutely disgraceful.
