luddites and crazed cultists, like the unbalanced greenies we have today have always been a part of our communities.
At the most simple level, part of their hysteria about the possiblity of change is the fear that they will be left out and not be able to keep up with the more competitive, more adaptable and simply more intelligent members of the community.
Better to drag everyone down to their backward and frozen-in-time comfort zone than allow others to get ahead and leave them behind.
There is also a simple failure of imagination.
Greenies, luddites and other hysterical "stop the world at this point where I feel safe" cultists are obviously constrained by simple-minded, linear thinking in a highly complex and non-linear world.
These poor unbalanced greenies and luddites seem only to be able to conceptualize simple, linear changes to the world around them and usually only the completely unbalanced impact of whatever they are hysterical about at a certain time.
The world does not work that way, just that greenies and luddites do not have the ability to make a mental model of the world more complicated than a very few simple straight lines.
There is no reason why we should continue to humor this mentally deficient greenie/luddite portion of our population, many of whom clearly have cultist-style mass-suicidal tendencies, and clearly want to take the rest of us with them to the grave.
