It doesn't suprise me that the shorts increased by 3/4 M last Monday because somebody was aggressively dumping at the open, and the selling continued at a steady pace for the rest of the session. They clearly wanted to drive the SP back down to ~ $2 range. But that's a lot of shares to be shorting at the bottom of the price range, just before we likely exit the ASX300. They too will need to be covered in the near future.
