The uncomfortable truth that nobody wants to hear
is that women are also violent, abusive and like
to control and manipulate people. My own
Mother made life hell at home for everyone and
made it impossible to grow up in a normal
environment. I grew up surrounded by violence
that 90 percent of the time was initiated, or
brought on by my mother’s behaviour. After she
had copped a belting she would then threaten to
leave and ruin my Dad financially, which wouldresult
in him threatening to kill her.
I have seen this scenario play out in a few homes
growing up and also to varying degrees in my
adult life.
The stereotypical story presented about DV is
just the tip of the iceberg and does nothing to
address the financial, emotional and mental toll
that is exacted on men, women and children alike.
To paint women as innocent victims and men as
the evil perpetrators is sending the wrong message.
The problem of domestic violence goes so much
deeper than the deaths of women and it needs
to be addressed in its entirety and not just
seen as a man against women problem.
