Index funds in theory can rebalance or reweight their holdings regularly
In rebalancing frequently there are significant costs involved and can potentially trigger a tax consideration
Also index funds have often lent out a large proportion of their shares to shorters making it difficult to trade around this
Hence those that are tracking say the ASX 300 will most likely only rebalance semiannually
