The other thing with series like the block they have a much tighter time frame to get things done in. Reality is with better planning, some shopping around and a bit more of your own effort you can perform the renovations for far less.
Case and point how much did they spend on their bathrooms $10-15k. Those that are serious about renovating can do things like tiling, painting etc themselves and save about half of that. Personally I have renovated a whole bathroom for less than $3k and it looks really great.
