The problem with shorting is it unbalances the market. Without shorting you have the buyers and the sellers who buy and sell shares they actually owned or want to own base on what they estimate the future holds. Shorters step in and are selling stocks they don't even own creating additional downward pressure. There is no opposite to this to balance if out. You can't borrow a share from a non holder because they don't have a share. it's only possible to short to the downside and so there is no reverse pressure to this on buy side. The shorters benefit from this unbalance because they are betting on the price declining and just the act of them selling the shares they just borrowed helps them push in the direction they want. Obviously when the players have deep pockets this is magnified and makes the already unfair playing ground completely unfair. Burn in hell shorters!
