Persistence is the key, keep going until the strange and uncomfortable feels OK, yes, your headmonster will fight you, but only until it knows who the boss is then it will quiet down a lot. The trick is not to fight it back, but think of it like a petulant 2-year-old having a tanty and just ignore it until it settles down.
