I don't think this is very difficult to work out...
If over 5,500 AS have already arrived this year and lets say average of about 80 per boatload. That's an average of about 70 boats just this year.
If the policy was to turn the boats around, only the first few boats would arrive to find they can't get in illegally this way. Word would soon get around that its' not worth the money to pay dodgy boat smugglers in flimsy boats.
So that would have saved about 65 approx boats from setting out on their dangerous trip in the first place and would not have risked housands more lives.
